I was a bit too old when the Pokémon cartoons started rolling out so they don’t hold a truly cherished spot in my heart, but for any kid (and kids at heart) growing up in the 90s we’ve got a bit of sad news. Takeshi Shudo, the chief writer for the Pokémon anime passed away at the age of 61. He suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Shudo was also the creator of the anime classic Magical Princess Minky Momo and worked on Martian Successor Nadesico and Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I’m not familiar with these so I can’t really comment, but it sounds like he had a pretty prolific life in anime.
I seriously doubt anyone thought that much about the writing while watching an episode of Pokémon, but for an entire generation of children this man’s writing was something they experienced on a weekly, if not daily, basis. The stories he created made one of the most popular shows in the world and that has to be saying something.
