No doubt, we were all a bit shocked when Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood for a 2010 release. A follow-up to Assassin’s Creed 2, released less than a year ago, from what we’ve seen, the game is more than just a cash in. Of course, to make this happen, Ubisoft has a handful of studios working on the title globally. But will it do it again for another Assassin’s Creed title next year? Probably not.

“I don’t think there’s going to be an Assassin’s Creed in 2011,” Ubisoft Montreal’s Jean-Francois Boivin tells Eurogamer. “I think we’re going to let it breathe a bit and really focus on bringing something new and exciting for the next time around. This is the end of Ezio’s story. This is it.”

Boivin brings up the seemingly never-ending yearly cycle of games in the music genre, stating “the interest is a lot less than it used to be. You want to keep people excited. You gotta make people miss it a bit. It’s like ‘Oh man! I’m so happy it’s back!’ But if you keep force-feeding to people then people are like ‘Yeah, enough of your Assassin’s Creed.'”

But he also brings up an interesting point — when the next game hits is not necessarily in the hands of the creative teams behind the project. It comes down to business, and he really has no idea when we should expect the next Assassin’s Creed at retail.

“Bottom line, it’s not for me to say,” he admits. “We have some business people that will eventually put a date and say ‘this needs to come out.’ We have our creative people, who are also pushing on their end, saying, ‘We need this much time to do something new and refreshing, just scope-wise.’ So I don’t know how much time we’ll need.

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
is out this November.
