How to get a mount in Fields of Mistria

Speed is key!

Mounts are an exciting new feature added to Fields of Mistria as part of the first major update on November 18. Not only do you get a default mount, but you can also ride around on your own large animals, as long as you meet certain requirements.

Unlocking your first mount can’t be done until you’ve completed a relatively large chunk of the main story of Fields of Mistria, and you’ll need to complete all of the following tasks:

  • Repair the Bridge
  • Repair the Mill
  • Upgrade the General Store
  • Repair the Beach Bridge
  • Replenish Mistria’s emergency food supply
  • Upgrade Hayden’s Barn
  • Find the Hayden’s Weathervane and return it to him

After doing all of that, you can finally move on to getting your hands on a mount that can give you a hefty speed boost.

During the “Find the Weathervane” quest, you’ll get your first glimpse of a new and mysterious Horse Statue that was also unearthed during the wind storm that took the Weathervane from the roof of Hayden’s Barn. This statue is your key to getting mounts.

Either before or after you’ve returned the Weathervane to Hayden, interact with the Horse Statue to trigger a cutscene. In this cutscene, you’ll be introduced to your first mount — Mistmare

After the cutscene, you’ll have a new icon on the bottom right side of the screen, with an associated key that you can press to summon your new mount. By default, this is the ‘=’ key on your keyboard. If you want to change this, you can do so by opening up the settings and navigating to controls, then scrolling down to find “Mount”. You can re-assign the default button, and also assign a secondary hotkey.

Your mount can be summoned while you’re outside at any time. There is no cooldown period between summonings, so you can hop on and off of your horse as many times as you like. Using the mount increases your movement speed dramatically, and also lengthens the distance of your jumps.

As well as improving your movement speed, mounts can be so much more useful if you unlock all of the mount perks available by interacting with the Horse Shrine in the same way that you would Caldarus’ Statue on your farm. There are currently three in total, and each offers something incredibly worthwhile. You’ll need to spend a hefty amount of Essence to unlock them, but they’re definitely worth it.

Here are the three skill perks, what they offer, and how much Essence you’ll need to part with to unlock them:

Mount perkWhat it doesCost
HorsepowerIncreases the movement speed of your mount by 10%.200 Essence
Harvest HorseWhen you run over fully grown crops or dig spots on your mount, the item or
crop will automatically pop out of the ground. (This is basically the Tractor Mod
from Stardew Valley).

Nice RideAllows you to change the appearance of your mount to any large animal that
you own and have more than 5 hearts of friendship with.

Before you can change the appearance of your mount, you’ll need to unlock the “Nice Ride” perk at the Horse Shrine. After that, you’ll be able to change the appearance of your mount to any owned large animal that has a friendship level of more than 5 hearts.

To change the appearance of your mount, open up the main menu and select the Animals tab. Your mount will be at the top of the list of animals on the right-hand side. Click on the mount, and then on the drop-down menu on the left side of the screen.

All animals that have a friendship level of 5 or more will be listed here. Select the animal that you want to ride, and your mount’s appearance will change. It’s worth noting that you retain all unlocked perks regardless of which animal you’re riding. You can also choose a new name for your mount in the same menu.
