Deepwoken is hardcore, and so will you have to be if you want to discover everything the game has to offer. At the start of every run, you’ll have to create a character, and the choices you make will define your build. To help you get started, here is our complete Deepwoken character creation guide.
Table of Contents
Race and Body Type

Should You Reroll Your Race?
When you create a slot, you’ll be assigned a random race, and when you reroll, you’ll get an option to keep either the new or the old race. So, as a rule of thumb, it’s better to create a new slot for 200 Robux instead of rerolling race for 150 Robux (the price difference isn’t that big).
Also, race variants are all cosmetic, except for Capra, where they provide slightly different bonuses depending on the variant. The difference is really minor, so choose whichever variant you think looks the best.
Names
Names in Deepwoken are entirely cosmetic, and you should choose any name and surname you consider the coolest. Also, there are many names from popular games and anime, including One Piece, FMA, Elden Ring, and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
Face, Markings, Ornaments, and Hair
As with names, the face, facial markings, and ornaments are all purely cosmetical, and most of these settings are either locked to your race or have a set of predefined options.
However, hair is different. It has four slots, and you can use any hair from the Roblox marketplace by copying its Asset ID (e.g., roblox.com/catalog/4707728483/Timber-Elf-Hair). Stacking them on top of each other works, and hair that is Off Sale is also good to use. The only requirement is that you select hair assets from Heads -> Hair.
Starting Weapon
The starting weapon choice is one of the most important aspects of character creation in Deepwoken. That’s because it sets you on the path to leveling a certain weapon type (Heavy, Medium, Light), and switching later will almost always be suboptimal. Here are all the starter weapons and how to unlock them:
Heavy Weapons
- Battleaxe: Available from the start. It has slow swing speed and good base damage.
- Avenger: Unlock it by upgrading to the fourth tier of Advanced Weapons (Echoes shop in character creation). It’s arguably worse than the Battleaxe.
Medium Weapons
- Sword: Available from the start. It has balanced stats and is generally the most popular weapon.
- Irontusk: Unlock it by upgrading to the second tier of Advanced Weapons (Echoes shop in character creation). It has better range, scaling, and penetration than the sword.
Light Weapons
- Stiletto: Available from the start. It’s considered to be the worst starter weapon.
- Way of Navae: Unlock it by finding a Navaen Nomad Captive in Erisia or Fort Merit. Then, bring it back to the Eastern Camp Master (Etris) or Beiruul (Meteor Isle).
- Jus Karita: Unlock it by reaching Power 5 and having 40 stats in Light Weapon Mastery. Then, talk to the Justicar Polis at Etris and ask him about the Justicars.
- Legion Kata: Do the Legion Scout quests or help the Legion Captain in the Legion vs Authority Lieutenant events at Starswept Valley until you get a commendation. Then, go to the Viper’s Jaw in Lower Erisia and give the commendation to Amara to unlock Legion Kata. It’s considered to be the best fist combat style.
- Quickfang: Unlock it by upgrading to the first tier of Advanced Weapons (Echoes shop in character creation). It’s a really bad weapon, but it allows you to get rapier talents early on.
- Silversix: Unlock it by upgrading to the third tier of Advanced Weapons (Echoes shop in character creation). It’s the only pistol/rifle starting weapon.
What is the Best Starting Weapon in Deepwoken?
Generally, all heavy and medium starting weapons are solid. However, for light weapons, Legion Kata and Silversix are the only good options. If you’re a complete beginner, you won’t have either of those unlocked, so choose any medium/heavy weapon that fits your playstyle better.
Attunements (Starting Magic)
Attunements are forms of magic specialization in Deepwoken. By selecting one during character creation, you’ll get a +10 starting bonus in that type of magic (affects which mantras and talents you can get). There are four attunements you have unlocked by default and three more that you can unlock in the world.
The first time you choose an attunement (out of the four default ones), others will be then locked, and you’ll have to choose Random to unlock them one by one. Here is the list of all attunement choices and what they do:
Attunement | Description | How to Get |
---|---|---|
None | You will start attunement-less. The mantra and talent options you get will depend on your basic attributes (Strength, Fortitude, etc.). | Always available. |
Random | Grants you a random one out of the four default attunements. | Always available. |
Flamecharm | Gives you access to Flamecharm mantras from the start, which are mostly damage-oriented with AoE and DoT. | Choose at the start or by using Random. |
Frostdraw | Gives you access to Frostdraw mantras from the start, which focus on area denial and debuffs. | Choose at the start or by using Random. |
Thundercall | Gives you access to Thundercall mantras from the start, which focus on damage, mobility, and CC. | Choose at the start or by using Random. |
Galebreathe | Gives you access to Galebreathe mantras from the start, which focus on mobility, projectiles, and AoE damage. | Choose at the start or by using Random. |
Ironsing | Gives you access to Ironsing mantras from the start, which focus on single-target damage and utility. | 1. Obtain a Pluripotent Alloy. 2. Visit Adar at Miner’s Landing. 3. Deliver 6 ores (Iron, Gold, Erisore, Irithine, Astruline, and Umbrite) to him. 4. Drink the Alloyed Elixir. |
Bloodrend | Gives you access to Bloodrend mantras from the start, which focus on HP drain and 1v1 combat. | 1. Kill Chaser. 2. Visit Vyrelda at the Firfire Village. 3. Kill 3 Ministry Bloodrenders and then deliver 3 Heartstars to Vyrelda. 4. Drink the Curseblood Potion. |
Shadowcast | Gives you access to Shadowcast mantras from the start, which focus on debuffs, Ether drain, and AoE damage. | 1. Get 5 Umbral Obsidian. 2. Deliver them to Nostor in the City of the Drowned sewers. 3. Drink the Nightblood Potion. |
What is the Best Beginner Attunement in Deepwoken?
Generally, the best beginner attunement option to choose is Random; that’s at least until you unlock all four default options. Then, you can start experimenting with each option, including None (attunement-less).
Basic Attributes (Starting Stats)
In Deepwoken, basic attributes affect a lot of your character’s stats, such as carry load, damage, HP, etc. More importantly, they affect which weapons and gear you can equip and which mantras (if attunement-less) and talents you can get. Here is what each basic attribute does in Deepwoken and what kind of equipment you’ll need it for:
Attribute | Effects |
---|---|
Strength (STR) | ā¢ Increases Carry Load by 1 per point. ā¢ Increases melee and mantra penetration by 0.1% per point. ā¢ Most heavy and some medium weapons require a high Strength stat. |
Fortitude (FTD) | ā¢ Increases your chances to resist food poisoning when eating raw materials (you can eat almost anything and not vomit with 50+ Fortitude). ā¢ Increases your HP by 0.5 per point. ā¢ Shields and some weapons and helmets require a high Fortitude stat. |
Agility (AGI) | ā¢ Increases climbing height, slide speed, slide distance, roll distance, and the power of speed bonuses from parkour. ā¢ Increases your character’s Stealth by 0.2% per point (reduces vision cones of NPCs and Monsters). ā¢ Some offhand weapons require a high Agility stat. |
Intelligence (INT) | ā¢ Increases Ether by 2 per point. ā¢ Increases potion potency and damage with Iron Bombs. ā¢ Some weapons require a high Intelligence stat. |
Willpower (WIL) | ā¢ Increases your Sanity by 3 per point. ā¢ Increases your Tempo by 0.5 per point. ā¢ Decreases the time you are knocked down for by 0.05s per point. ā¢ Legendary weapon Light’s Final Toll requires 60 Willpower. |
Charisma (CHR) | ā¢ Increases Ether by 1.5 per point. ā¢ Required to pass certain dialogue checks. ā¢ NPCs will positively respond to your citations from How To Make Friends at 33 charisma, and eagerly at 66 charisma. ā¢ Legendary weapon Kyrsieger requires 15 Charisma. |
What is the Best Beginner Attributes Distribution?
Well, there really is no best attributes distribution for a beginner, as most good talents and equipment will require way more than you can allocate during character creation. So, you might as well just dump them all into your race’s bonus stats so that they are both 10. That way, you’ll at least have a few new talents in the pool.
However, there is an exception to the above-mentioned rule, and that’s if you’re starting with the Lone Warrior origin. In that case, the best attribute distribution is to deallocate all points and invest them during the Trial of One into weapon/attunement attributes. That way, you’ll get access to OP combat mantras and talents very early.
Boons and Flaws
By picking flaws and boons during character creation in Deepwoken, you can alter your start and make progression easier. You can pick up two flaws (only one if you select Simple) and boons at most. Here are all the boons and flaws you can select, including their effects:
Boon | Effect | Points | Flaw | Effect | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Gourment | Increase Hunger/Thirst gain from food and drinks by 150%. | 1 | Vegetarian | You can only eat plant-based foods (locks out Carnivore; enables Herbivore and Iron Gut. | 1 |
Maverick | Increases stat EXP gain by ~10% if you kill an NPC alone. | 1 | Obvious | Grants you -20% Stealth, allowing Enemies/Monsters to spot you from a further distance, and with less difficulty when not crouching. | 1 |
Steadfast | Reduces the amount of armor durability lost from being damaged by 25%. | 1 | Deficient | Reduced Ether regeneration by a flat ammount. | 1 |
Packmule | Carry load is increased by 50, item stack limits are increased by 25% (rounded), and food max quantity is slightly increased. | 1 | Glutton | Hunger and Thirst depletion is increased by ~75%. | 1 |
Autodidact | Gain 3 free points every Power up, consuming an investment each use. Does not generate points over the total maximum. | 1 | Squeamish | Lose ~2.5% Hunger when gripping NPCs or other players. | 1 |
Survivalist | Grants immunity to acid rain. Parasites accumulate on you ~33% slower. | 1 | Haemophilia | Blood loss from all sources is increased. | 1 |
Scrapper | Every other (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) card roll, you gain an extra ace. | 1 | Manic | All incoming Insanity and Insanity Damage is increased. | 1 |
Sly | Reduces amount of negative rep gained. (Unlock it by paying off your negative reputation with any faction) | / | Simple | Increases the EXP curve, making leveling slower, especially on later levels. | 2 |
/ | / | / | Fugitive | Start with low reputation toward all factions. (Unlock it by earning a negative reputation with a faction that wasn’t negative at the start) | 1 |
What are the Best Boons and Flaws for Beginners in Deepwoken?
Some flaws can depend on your build, while some are just generally good to take. For example, Deficient gives you a straight-up free point if you’re planning to get Oath: Silentheart, while Manic and Simple are the best flaws overall.
On the other hand, boons such as Scrapper and Autodidact are good general picks, as they speed up progression and allow you to get stronger mantras and talents earlier. Steadfast and Packmule are also good choices, though the latter is only good on mage builds.
Origin
Origin is one of the most important choices you’ll have to make during character creation in Deepwoken, as it determines your spawn, starting gear, and starting reputation. Here are all the origins you can choose and how to unlock them:
Origin | Spawns, Gear, & Reputation | Pros & Cons | How to Unlock |
---|---|---|---|
Castaway | ā¢ Etris and Isle of Vigils spawns ā¢ Default gear ā¢ Friend of Kingdom of Etrea and Lost Celtor ā¢ Enemy of Knives of Eylis, Ministry, and Hundred Legions | ā¢ The most default origin | ā¢ Available at the start. |
Lone Warrior | ā¢ Minityrsa spawn (Trial of One) ā¢ Same setup as the Castaway | ā¢ Allows you to quickly reach Power 6 ā¢ Allows use of the Shrine of Solitude ā¢ Default spawn is really bad | ā¢ Wipe a slot. ā¢ Defeat the Thresher in the Trial of One. |
Deepbound | ā¢ Castle Light and Diluvian Mechanism spawns ā¢ Friend of Divers and Lost Celtor ā¢ Enemy of Knives of Eylis, Ministry, and Hundred Legions ā¢ Special talent that allows you to teleport back to Castle Light with a 20-minute cooldown ā¢ Diver Apprentice Armor | ā¢ Increased EXP gain and other buffs while in The Depths ā¢ Reduced EXP gain in the Overworld ā¢ Bonuses while you’re in the Castle Light and its NPCs are at your disposal ā¢ Access to the secret passage to the Temple of Hearts ā¢ You can’t do the Trial of One ā¢ Your Depths Trial is harder | 1. Encounter Akira in Celtor Wastes and talk about joining The Divers. 2. Meet him later at the Castle Light to unlock the origin. |
Voidwalker | ā¢ Voidheart spawn ā¢ Whale Initiate Armor ā¢ Friend of Knives of Eylis and Lost Celtor ā¢ Enemy of Kingdom of Etrea, Children of Navae, Ministry, Hive, Summer Company, and Hundred Legions | ā¢ Grasp of Eylis talent (specializes you for doing bounties) ā¢ Special talent that allows you to teleport back to Voidheart ā¢ Can teleport to bounty targets ā¢ Reduced EXP from events | 1. Grip 5 players who are not allied with you. 2. Talk with Eiris (2nd dialogue option; bottom deck of a non-burning boat) during the Etrean Soldiers vs Knives of Eylis event (The Aratel Sea/The Etrean Sea). 3. Walk into the Knife Captain’s Time Bubble move to be teleported to Voidheart. 4. Talk to Eylis to get the origin. |
Ignition Delver | ā¢ Miner’s Landing or Chariot’s Spire spawn ā¢ Friend of Ignition Union and Lost Celtor ā¢ Enemy of Knives of Eylis, Ministry, Summer Company, and Hundred Legions | ā¢ Increased EXP from dungeons ā¢ Decreased EXP from everything else ā¢ Can do the Trial of One ā¢ You can accept jobs remotely | ā¢ Go to the 2nd Layer of The Depths and save Epsi. Then, return to Alpha in the union base. ā¢ Do the Orion’s quest by clearing Summer Company enemies and report back to him. |
What is the Best Beginner Origin in Deepwoken?
Lone Wolf is by far the best beginner origin. So, if you just created your first slot, wipe it instantly to unlock Lone Wolf. Then, roll with that origin until you master the Trial of One (play the game regularly after completing the trial; no need to spam it). That way, you’ll speed up your progression and experience all the content the game has to offer much sooner.
