How to Find Clay in Astroneer

Don't mix it up with soil

Finding Clay is one of the essential tasks you’ll need to complete in Astroneer if you want to enjoy the content of the Glitchwalkers DLC.

As you’re just starting your journey, you might end up getting confused about this resource. While you can collect Soil at any moment (it’s the easiest resource to obtain), getting Clay will require you to complete some steps. Once you’re correctly set up, it will be really easy to find this resource.

How to get Clay in Astroneer

To get Clay, you’ll first need to start with its source. That’s right; you’ll need a lot of Soil, which can be collected relatively quickly with the help of the Terrain Tool. You’ll want to point it towards the organic material and pull in as much as you can.

Here are the three items you’ll need in order to obtain Clay.

  • Small Canister: You’ll need two Small Canisters, which you can create from the small printer on your backpack. Once you have obtained the two canisters, equip them in your backpack.
  • Soil Centrifuge: This item can be created using a Medium Printer using Compound and Aluminum. You’ll also need a Large Platform to place the centrifuge. To make a Centrifuge, you’ll require 2x Compound and 1x Aluminum.
  • Terrain Tool: Quite obvious.

Now, start collecting Soil, and fill the two canisters that are equipped to your backpack. You can keep more canisters, but only two of them are needed. Once the two canisters are full, place them on the Soil Centrifuge. You’ll get six Clay from a complete cycle.

You can also exchange your Scrap from the Trade Platform and obtain Clay. But there are far more crucial resources, like Lithium, that can be obtained using your Scrap, so I won’t want to spend them on getting Clay in Astroneer.

There are two cool items that utilize Clay in their production. The PUM-KN Shelter can be created by the Large Shelter, and it requires one each of Clay, Resin, Carbon, and Plastic. You an also use Clay in the Smelting Furnace to create Ceramic, which in turn, is used in several recipes.
