Nick Chester already touched on this in his outstanding Metroid: Other M preview from yesterday, but I got so excited about this one particular detail that I felt it bore repeating.
Since upcoming Wii game Metroid: Other M has been revealed to be the direct sequel to Super Metroid, I figured there would be a few references to the SNES masterpiece thrown in here and there. But, this … well, this I wasn’t ready for.
In the opening cinematic of the game, the entire final sequence from Super Metroid is recreated with drastically improved, completely 3D visuals. To try my best not to ruin it for anyone who hasn’t played Super Metroid (blasphemy!), this is the now legendary sequence involving Samus and a certain Baby Metroid. For people that have experienced it, it goes without saying it is one of the most emotionally complex, exquisitely staged sequences in videogame history.
It also happens to be the very first memorable moment I covered in my long-running Memory Card series. And it also just so happens to be MY FAVORITE VIDEOGAME SEQUENCE OF ALL TIME!
Now, I don’t want to get my hopes up for what I am going to see come June 27 — the tragically beautifully Palom and Porom scene recreated in the Final Fantasy IV remake for the DS, for example, was not nearly as powerful in 3D — but this news is still very exciting to hear. To this day, the return of the Baby Metroid still brings a little tear to my eye every time I see it. It really is that stunning. For me, seeing this genius piece of visual storytelling recreated in Metroid: Other M alone is worth the price of admission.
