Treasure Dungeons are not only a rich source of rare rewards in Final Fantasy XIV, but also a solid way to make a lot of Gil in a relatively short period of time. Accessed via Timeworn Maps, each expansion except A Realm Reborn has its own dungeons to explore.
Note: If you’re hoping to complete the Ultimog challenge for The Moogle Treasure Trove: The Hunt for Goetia, there is no specific Treasure Dungeon that you need to complete. However, it’s worth remembering that even lower level Treasure Dungeons will sync you to the level of the dungeon.
With that said, even the highest level dungeons (Level 100) can be completed with as little as two people, if you’ve got a good understanding of your core rotations.
How to unlock the Treasure Hunt and use Timeworn Maps in Final Fantasy XIV
Before you can start diving into Treasure Dungeons, you need to unlock the ability to decipher the maps. To do this, you’ll need to reach level 36 in any battle class and then complete the “Treasures and Tribulations” side quest by talking to H’loonh in Eastern La Noscea (X:21.1, Y:21.1). This will unlock two actions – Decipher and Dig.
As long as you have a Timeworn Map of any type in your inventory, you can right click it and select “Decipher”. This will provide you with an image of a map, marked with an X to show where you need to go. The map will be a very zoomed in and small section of a larger map, so it’s up to you to figure out which zone you need to head to.
Once you think you’ve reached where you think you need to be, you can use the Dig action to check if there’s a coffer nearby. If there is, you’ll be told that one has appeared. If not, you’re in the wrong spot and you’ll need to re-check your map and adjust accordingly.
When a coffer appears, interact with it and then defeat any enemies that appear. Then, interact with the coffer again to either get some rewards, or if you’re lucky (and this is what you’re really hoping for, be honest) a portal will appear, granting you access to the Treasure Dungeon.
How to get Timeworn Maps in Final Fantasy XIV
There are a few different ways to get your hands on Timeworn Maps in FFXIV:
- Gathering them yourself as either Miner, Botanist, or Fisher
- Purchasing them from the Marketboard
- Purchasing special Timeworn Maps from the Itinerant Moogle during Tomestone events
How do Treasure Dungeons work in Final Fantasy XIV?
There are two types of Treasure Dungeons in FFXIV, both of which have a version in each expansion besides Heavensward.
Normal Treasure Dungeons
Once you enter a ‘normal’ Treasure Dungeon, you’ll find yourself on a platform with a coffer in the middle. Only the person who deciphered the map and spawned the Treasure Dungeon can interact with the coffer. Upon interacting with this coffer, waves of enemies will appear and you’ll need to defeat them before interacting with the coffer again to claim your rewards for that floor.
Occasionally, you’ll be offered the chance to gamble on the contents of the coffer through playing a game of higher or lower. Each time you guess correctly, the contents of the coffer will double. Rewards will mostly be given to the person who can interact with the Coffer, although other players can also get rewards too.
Whether you get the chance to gamble on the coffer or not, you’ll then have to take a gamble over two doors. One door will open and allow you to progress further into the Treasure Dungeon, while the other will set off a trap and expel you from the Dungeon entirely. I would say pick wisely, but this is all down to luck.
There are five levels to each ‘normal’ Treasure Dungeon, with the final level playing host to the Dungeon’s boss encounter. If you defeat this final boss, you’ll get riches and bragging rights.
Shifting Treasure Dungeons
When you enter a ‘shifting’ Treasure Dungeon, you’ll find yourself in the middle of a ring of icons with an arcane sphere in the middle. Once again, only the person who spawned the Treasure Dungeon can interact with this sphere and perform an invocation.
When they do, the camera will pan into a top-down view and the icons around the circle will light up in sequence. Wherever the light stops, that’s the enemy that you’ll need to fight and defeat if you want to progress. Or, if you’re unlucky, you’ll set off a trap and be expelled from the Dungeon.
Just like with ‘normal’ Treasure Dungeons, there are five possible invocations that can take place, culminating in an encounter with the Treasure Dungeon’s boss. Defeating this boss can reward riches and rare items.

Remember that all types of Timeworn Maps can be purchased on the Marketboard, with older, lower-level maps selling for much less than higher-level, more recent ones. For the purposes of this list, I’ll only provide information about where they can be gathered.
