Throne and Liberty: How to defeat the Old Wizard’s Eye

The first real challenge of Taedal's Tower

The first time you encounter the Old Wizard’s Eye in Throne and Liberty will be on Floor 14 of Taedal’s Tower. This solo-only boss challenge mode pits you against deadly bosses with unique abilities including the Beholder-looking Old Wizard’s This boss can be quite tricky, but thankfully we know just how to defeat the Old Wizard’s Eye and continue progressing through the tower.

How to beat the Old Wizard’s Eye

You can defeat the Old Wizard’s Eye without any special skills equipped, however, it’s recommended that you bring some sort of movement ability such as the Staff Smokescreen skill as it makes the encounter that much more trivial.

When you start the encounter with Old Wizard’s Eye, throw all your damage at him right out of the gate as you have a few seconds until he uses his first ability. The entire encounter progresses in a scripted manner, so once you know the sequence of his attacks and how to handle them, this fight becomes much easier. Here are all of the Old Wizard’s Eyes abilities:

Fireball

This is essentially Old Wizard’s Eye’s auto attack. Every now and then he will lob a singular Fireball at you that deals damage. You can technically block this with your defensive skill, but it does very little damage as long as you have at least a little bit of gear. However, if you notice the Fireball is hitting you for a decent chunk of HP, simply hit your defensive skill as you see him rear up to lob the Fireball, as it will be off cooldown before his next ability.

Singular Slam

The first heavy damage-dealing skill by the Old Wizard’s Eye is his Singular Slam. This one shows up with the purple telegraph circle so you know exactly when to pop your defensive skill and block the attack. You’ll want to do this as the Old Wizard’s Eye rises up and slams the ground which can deal some decent damage if you do not block this ability. He will use Singular Slam twice before moving on to his next ability.

Flame Patches

Old Wizard’s Eye will say something in a demonic language, indicated both via audio and by the scribble text bubble above his head. Immediately after a red telegraphed circle will appear at your character. You have a few seconds to move out of this before a Flame Patch spawns there and begins dealing damage over time to you if you are still standing in it. He will trigger three consecutive Flame Patches, so during this time you can either just keep moving until all three spawn, or step out of the first one, wait a second, step out of the second, wait a second, then step out of the third.

Triple Slam

Immediately after casting Flame Patches, the Old Wizard’s Eye will begin slamming the ground again. This time, it’s a little different than his Singular Slam. You’ll see a big red AOE circle swirl into him, then immediately swirl back outwards. When it swirls back outwards, you want to jump. You can’t block this attack successfully because of how fast it happens, so you need to jump over the wave of damage that is sent out with each slam. He casts this slam three times in a row, so you’ll want to be ready to jump over each one.

Forward Slam

About five or so seconds after Triple Slam, the Old Wizard’s Eye will do another blockable Singular Slam immediately followed up by his deadly Forward Slam. This skill will one shot most players unless you are super tanky or using Sword and Shield. The telegraph is a frontal attack from the Old Wizard’s Eye, and cannot be jumped over like the Triple Slam. He will also slow you while in the frontal, which is what makes it difficult to escape. The only way to mitigate this damage is to quickly get behind or to the side of the Old Wizard’s Eye, where the telegraphed attack is not shown. This is where the mobility skills come in handy because you can just pop it to quickly get behind the Old Wizard’s Eye.

After the Forward Slam the Old Wizard’s Eye will repeat all of these skills in the same order. You can almost certainly kill him before he reaches the Forward Slam attack again. With enough gear, and in a full damage spec, you can even kill him before the first Foreward Slam.

Once you’ve defeated the Old Wizard’s Eye you’ll be able to move onto Floor 15, Dren, the Stealer of Light. This is a much easier boss but also has some unique skills. Even though you won’t fight the Old Wizard’s eye again in the tower, his attacks are similar to the World Boss in Throne and Liberty named Malakar, so don’t forget these mechanics!
