GTA V back at the top of sales charts more than a decade after launch

The Rockstar title took the top spot after disappointing sales of Star Wars Outlaws

11 years after its initial release, GTA V is back at the top of the charts, according to data collated by GamesIndustry.biz, having been the best-selling game in Europe during August. The game has sold more than 200 million copies globally, with only Minecraft having sold more copies.

There was some anticipation that the newly launched Star Wars Outlaws would take the spot for game sales in August, but lackluster sales for the new release and GTA V’s seemingly unending allure meant that wasn’t the case, with Rockstar’s title pushing the Star Wars open world game back into second position. Hogwarts Legacy was the third best-selling title for the month with Kingdom Come: Deliverance and EA Sports FC 24 rounding out the top five.

GTA V launched in September 2013 to much acclaim. In particular, it was roundly praised for its solid single-player campaign, which lasts more than 30 hours and includes tons of side quests and additional content for intrepid players.

However, it is the game’s online campaign, GTA Online that has helped it remain in the public eye and on top-selling games charts. The game still has a considerable online following and has become extremely popular with content creators for its roleplaying capabilities. There were plans for GTA V to have three DLC packs, although only one of these materialized as an online download. Rockstar has previously stated that its work on Red Dead Redemption 2 and continued work on GTA Online led to the DLCs being scrapped.

In late 2023, fans of the series were treated to a trailer for the next game in the series, GTA 6. It is expected to be released in fall 2025 and has been confirmed for launch on the Xbox Series X/S and PS5. It has not yet been confirmed for release on previous-gen consoles, however.
