A Bane and Deathstroke feature film? Sure, why not

The dawn of the buddy villain genre?

After the success of Deadpool and Wolverine, we’ll be seeing another comic book team up, this time from DC Comics.

As spotted by The Hollywood Reporter, we know that the next two comic book personalities to pair up are Bane and Deathstroke.

The script is by Matthew Horton, who has screenwriting credits on the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, Marvel’s Moon Knight, and who also wrote the screenplay for 2018’s Operation Finale — which also starred Oscar Isaac.

We still don’t know whether the new Bane and Deathstroke story will be part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU, or if, like Joker, be its own thing. While we don’t have an official word on it, I’m betting it’s safe to say it won’t be part of the Snyderverse. No one is attached to direct yet, and no plot or cast details are available, either.

This duo might seem like a peculiar choice, but it makes more sense than you’d think. Bane is a popular DC villain who became immortalized after Tom Hardy’s masterful rendition of the role in The Dark Knight Rises. Deathstroke might not be as popular, but there’s a likely reason why he was picked for this project. Deathstroke’s real name is Slade Wilson, which might remind you of Deadpool’s real name, Wade Wilson. That’s no coincidence. Though many are unaware of it, Deadpool was created by Marvel and Rob Liefeld to riff on Deathstroke. It’s not unlikely that DC is firing back and using the popularity of Deadpool’s latest outing as a jumping pad for its own uneasy team-up. The success of comic book movies starring villains is far from a safe bet, with the Venom films finding a lot of commercial success and a healthy degree of fan appraisal, but Morbius nearly undid all that upon release.

Here’s hoping the buddy-villain dynamic will provide the necessary juice to make this shine and perhaps spawn a new wave of movies where all sorts of different characters have to overcome their differences to bring us hilarity.

While we still have no release date for the Bane and Deathstroke project, you can get your fill of DC with The Penguin, currently airing on MAX, and Joker 2, which is currently in theaters.
