You will need to play through the game until you reach the Snake Trail in Bamboo Grove. Proceed through this area, and you will come to a mystery character who can upgrade your Gourd, allowing you to absorb spirits with it. The very first enemy you meet who is likely to drop this is the Wandering Wight, a tough enemy at the very start of the game. Should you defeat him early, before you have the Gourd upgrade, you can absorb any missed spirits from the main menu in a Shrine.

Finding these enemies to absorb is easy, as you will come across them throughout the course of the game. They will be marked as different from standard enemies by blue energy around them, and they will hit incredibly hard and take much more damage than standard enemies. It is best to think of them as a type of mini-boss.

You should ensure you fully explore the game’s many areas because some of these will be tucked off the beaten path in their own mini-arenas that you will need to try and find. When you beat these enemies, a glowing blue orb of energy will appear that you can interact with, grabbing the spirit for yourself.

How to equip a Spirit

To equip a spirit, go to your Inventory, and you will find the Spirits in the last slot of the items above your armor. You can equip your Spirit here and then use the Spirit in a fight by hitting both triggers on the controller at the same time. It is important to keep in mind that the Spirits will also give you an added passive benefit when equipped, such as better defense, attack, or some other improved stat.

How to upgrade a Spirit

Spirits can be upgraded, and each upgrade level will provide a benefit. To do so, visit a Shrine, select Self-Advance, and then Cultivate Spirits. You will need different resources, depending on what level the Spirit is. You could need Will, Blood of the Iron Bull, or a Knot of Voidness. Pay close attention to what each upgrade will do.

Some of them will reduce the energy required to use the Spirit, while others might increase the damage that it does when you cast it.

Which skill you should be using is entirely up to you, as they all have slightly different styles. I would suggest experimenting with them from fight to fight, as they will all match up a little differently depending on the boss you are fighting. Personally, a favorite has been the Wandering Wight’s powerful headbutt attack.
