Demon Slayer has introduced audiences to a range of unique and powerful characters, each with a distinct style and personality. On one hand, there are the mighty Hashira, who stand up even against the mightiest of foes. Even the infamous Upper Moon demons have to be wary against them. On the other hand, there are less combat-y characters like the enigmatic swordsmiths, who provide support to the Demon Slayers behind the scenes.
One of the Hashira who has taken a good chunk of the spotlight during the Swordsmith Village Arc is the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito. Just like when I talked about Kyojuro Rengoku, Tengen Uzui, and the lot, this article will contain some nasty, nasty spoilers from the manga. If you are not too keen on that, better proceed with a tiny bit of caution.
Who is the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito?
Muichirio, much like his title, is enshrouded with a fog of mystery. At least, that’s the case when he debuted in the series. Muichiro is often shown as aloof and distant, often lost in his thoughts and indifferent to his surroundings. However, it is later revealed that his apathy is rooted in the fact that he, himself, has forgotten his past. As such, his decisions are mostly backed by his sense of duty rather than a sense of responsibility, often resulting in him coming off as harsh and cold.
Another interesting aspect of Muichiro’s character is his age. He is the youngest among the Hashira, being only 14 years of age. Even so, he far dominates the majority of the force. Just two months after joining the Demon Slayer Corps, he has already risen among the ranks and earned the title of Mist Hashira.
What is Muichiro Tokito’s backstory?
Muichiro Tokito was born into a family of woodcutters, though orphaned at a young age. Since then, he lived together with his older twin brother, Yuichiro. Despite their blood connection, the twins had contrasting personalities. Muichiro was compassionate and optimistic, while Yuichiro was cynical and harsh. These differences would often lead to disagreements between the two brothers, especially since Yuchiro despised the idea of sacrificing oneself for the sake of others.
The two brothers once again faced tragedy when a demon attacked their home. In spite of his adamance against selflessness, Yuichiro showed no hesitation in using his body to protect his younger brother. Unfortunately, the attack severely wounded him. Muichiro, in a moment of rage and desperation, managed to defeat the demon using the tools available to him, but it was too late to save his brother. This traumatic event led Muichiro to lose his memory and suppress his emotions, which he carried even after joining the Demon Slayers and rising through its ranks. He also adopted his brother’s cold and distant behavior.
The turning point in Muichiroās journey came through his interactions with Tanjiro during the Swordsmith Village Arc. Tanjiro’s kindness, empathy, and unwavering determination to protect others began to resonate with Muichiro. Furthermore, Tanjiroās genuine concern for others reminded Muichiro of his father, ultimately initiating the return of his memory.
How strong is Muichiro Tokito?
Muichiro Tokito is widely regarded as one of the most powerful and skilled members of the Demon Slayer Corps, despite being one of its youngest members. After all and as stated above, he earned the title of Mist Hashira within two months of entering the force ā a feat unheard of prior to Muichiro achieving it. Even before becoming a Demon Slayer, he was already strong enough to beat up and pin down a demon with whatever was available to him.
Muichiro’s combat abilities only improved after becoming a Demon Slayer. Not only has he mastered Mist Breathing, but he also enhanced his physical abilities to superhuman levels. Much like its name suggests, Mist Breathing is designed to disorient and overwhelm the user’s enemies. It originally had six forms, but Muichiro formulated a seventh form ā Obscuring Clouds.
Awakening his Demon Slayer Mark further boosted Muichiro’s combat prowess. In his awakened state, he is strong enough to take down Upper Moon Five. His development doesn’t stop there. In his future fight with Kokushibo, he will obtain an ability called Transparent World, which will allow him to see his opponent’s muscles, blood flow, and joint movements. Unfortunately, even this technique is not enough for Muichiro to defeat Upper Moon One Kokushibo on his own.
