Digital distribution platform GOG and development group Team Folon have announced today that Fallout: London, the highly anticipated overhaul mod for Fallout 4, is available to download and play right now. After a tumultuous time with Fallout 4‘s next-gen update, the mod is finally out in the wild.
In early July, Team Folon explained that it just needed GOG’s green light to release Fallout: London to fans. That green light has long since been given, and you can pick the mod up from its official page on GOG right here. The mod is compatible with both the Steam and GOG versions of Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition. However, you’ll need to manually downgrade the Steam version to patch 1.10.163.0 to play, whereas the GOG version is compatible with Fallout: London the second it’s finished downloading.
Mind the gap
Fallout: London isn’t an official entry in the Fallout franchise, but it’s designed to feel like one. At 65 GB, including Fallout 4, you’ll need a decent amount of space on your PC to run the game and mod, but the system requirements are the same. As long as you can play Fallout 4, you can run Fallout: London.
The mod is a massive overhaul for Fallout 4, but its development hasn’t been without its woes. In trying to deliver the mod to players, Team Folon encountered yet another issue: it’s too big for most mod distribution platforms. Bethesda has added insult to injury with the next-gen update for Fallout 4, which looked like it would delay the mod indefinitely.
That’s why GOG stepped in. The company wanted to see the mod get over the finish line. After all, it had a release date and was set to hit PC right before Bethesda scuppered those plans. GOG has created a custom launcher for the mod that will allow it to function despite its massive file size. It also wants to make the installation process as easy as possible, which is why GOG’s native version of Fallout 4 is automatically compatible.
Fallout: London is the culmination of five years of work from a team with a singular vision. Bethesda has never visited anywhere in the Fallout universe outside of the US, but many fans, myself included, have always wanted to see what the rest of the world in this post-apocalyptic universe looks like.
GOG has discounted Fallout 4 by 60% for the launch of this mod, making it easier to justify picking up yet another copy of the game just to play Fallout: London. Considering the legwork the digital distributor has put in to get this mod out to fans and its expertise in bringing titles to PC, I’ll be playing today using the GOG version and diving into this post-apocalyptic vision of the UK as soon as it’s finished downloading.
