The Witcher 3 mod lets you make your own custom Witcher or Sorceress

Goodbye Geralt of Rivia, hello Geraldo Riviera!

Though there’s never been a dearth of mods for The Witcher 3, its modding scene has truly come into its own as of late, even before the official mod kit came out. Whereas Eternal Hunt revamps The Witcher 3‘s gameplay, Custom Player Characters lets you make your own Geralt.

Actually, the Custom Player Characters mod for The Witcher 3 is even more impressive than that, as it not merely an opportunity to add new beard and hairstyles to Geralt. Instead, this mod delivers a full-featured character creation menu that wouldn’t be completely out of place in a mainline Bethesda Softworks RPG. Not only are female characters now on the menu for The Witcher 3, then, as impressive as that sounds, but you can also play the game as a proper sorceress.

The Witcher 3: Custom Player Characters is one of the most comprehensive Witcher mods we’ve seen yet

Developed by a modder known as nikich340, Custom Player Characters is nothing short of transformative. As the trailer featured above shows, the feature list is way more comprehensive than the mod’s title might have you believe:

  • play The Witcher 3 as a Witcher, Witcheress, or a Sorceress
  • create your own The Witcher 3 character from the ground-up, or use an existing NPC’s appearance and/or armor
  • improved female animation sets to reduce the character’s skeleton stretching unnaturally
  • all-new magic combat system for Sorceress characters, alongside a hefty story quest allowing you to learn new spells
  • support for a separate female Witcher armor mod and separately available female Geralt voicelines

Granted, the mod’s UI simply reuses The Witcher 3‘s dialogue interface to provide options to the player, which might look somewhat disappointing at a glance. With just a tiny bit of getting used to it, though, it becomes plainly obvious that nikich340 has produced a ridiculously powerful and feature-rich mod that can re-contextualize the entire Witcher gameplay experience, if you want it to do so.

A mod this powerful is, naturally, somewhat complicated to install. The whole process shouldn’t be too problematic if you’re even remotely familiar with modding on PC, but nikich340 warns that Custom Player Characters stores its data within The Witcher 3‘s game saves. In other words, uninstallation is going to be problematic should you ever need to get rid of the mod. Thankfully, Custom Player Characters comes with a one-click option to revert back to vanilla Geralt, if things get too broken to continue.

With mods such as Eternal Hunt, Custom Player Characters, and the recently ported old Witcher game maps, it’s clear that The Witcher 3 has silently become a true modding powerhouse, years after its release. Who knows what might be coming next, then.
