We knew it was coming, but the Guilty Gear Strive anime has received its first trailer. Guilty Gear Strive: Dual Rulers, is coming in 2025.
Iāve played quite a bit of the Guilty Gear games going back to the original. Not as much as Street Fighter but more than, say, Mortal Kombat. And I still have no idea what theyāre supposed to be about. I see all the character interactions, and theyāre great, but the wider narrative is lost on me. This lack of context continues with this trailer.
Hereās the story synopsis that came with it:
āAfter the decline of the once robust fields of science and technology, a new energy source known as magic fuels the modern era. Humanity creates forbidden biological weapons: Gears. Those Gears eventually stand against humanity in a rebellion. Although they manage to overcome in the struggle for survival known as the Crusades, humanityās losses are so great that even after several decades pass, their emotional wounds remain unable to fully heal. Sin Kiske, the child of a human and a Gear, heads to his father Ky and mother Dizzyās wedding ceremony. Their wedding breaks the ultimate taboo: a union between a human and a Gear. Even with the world at peace, it took many years for such a ceremony to come to fruition. Despite the complex array of emotions surrounding it, the wedding ceremony is met with blessings. When suddenly, a mysterious girl appearsā¦ The fated child inheriting Gear bloodāand the mysterious girl who despises Gears. Their meeting would shake the world.ā
Okay, I think I mostly understand that within the context of the series. I donāt want to test that by saying anything further, though, because Iād probably be wrong. Maybe this series will be what I need to make all the narrative pieces really click for me. Or maybe I should actually play Guilty Gear Striveās story mode instead of just sticking to Arcade.
In any case, the series is being done by Sanzigen and is directed by Shigeru Morikawa. Itās scheduled for 2025.
