At gamescom today, Sony announced its Digital Comics reader for the PlayStation Portable, currently partnering with Marvel to allow users to download popular comics directly to the handheld.
While we’ll temper our excitement until we hear more about pricing (Sony’s plans to reveal more details closer to launch), we had to ask — could there be more than comics in the future? Perhaps other publications and books, in order to compete with services and products like Amazon’s Kindle?
“No, no. This is strictly a comics service at the moment,” Sony’s Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, told us in a telephone interview today.
“There’s definitely the technical possibility of doing [more things] with that application,” he admits, “but this is just comics.”
We have to admit, we like pretty pictures with our words, but we wouldn’t scoff at the idea of putting more types of content on our PSP. Provided the price is right, we look forward to catching up with our favorite super heroes and villains when the service launches later this year.
