How to complete An Unlikely Invitation in Fallout 76

Kick off the Skyline Valley questline.

An Unlikely Invitation is the first quest you must complete to access the Skyline Valley update in Fallout 76. This update might not allow you to play as a Ghoul, but it does open up an interesting new location and the opportunity to delve for more loot, so it’s well worth jumping into.

You’ll pick up An Unlikely Invitation when you next launch Fallout 76. The quest is automatically added under Main Quests on your PipBoy. You should open it and track it so you can follow each step as it evolves because this one involves a lot of trekking across the map. However, first, it’s time to turn on your radio and figure out what’s going on in the Appalachian Wasteland that’s got so many people worked up.

How to complete An Unlikely Invitation in Fallout 76

Below, I’ve outlined how to complete An Unlikely Invitation in Fallout 76 through each step of the quest. One point in the quest can be seriously bugged, but I’ve explained how to get around that when you get to it.

Step 1: Listen to the new broadcast

The first part of this quest tasks you with listening to a broadcast and following it to a set location. Open your PipBoy and head to the Radio. Then, select the new Vault-Tec Broadcast option to listen to the broadcast. This will add a location to your map that you must investigate to progress.

I already had a C.A.M.P. close to this location, so I didn’t need to pay to fast travel nearby. It’s close to Vault 76, so a good option is to fast travel there and then run all the way to the map icon, close to The Wayward.

Step 2: Speak to Alyssa

Once you’ve found the location and taken a sweet photo with the Vault 63 door, it’s time to speak to Alyssa. This NPC should be hanging out at a house nearby, so you won’t have to go too far. Chatting to her gives you another location to visit, but this one’s a bit more dangerous.

A bug in Fallout 76 can prevent Alyssa from appearing. If this happens to you, it’s time to hop to a new server. You can do this by moving to a new world from the menu. Closing the game and launching it will also achieve the same result. Alyssa should appear after just one server hop, but if she doesn’t, keep moving until you find her.

Note that you can be attacked while speaking to Alyssa. The enemies in the Appalachian Wasteland will not wait for you to say thank you or anything else. They’ll just attack. Make sure you’re in full health before entering this conversation, or clear out the surrounding area first.

Step 3: Find Vault 63

The map location you’re given is in Ash Heap, a pretty lethal area if you’re unprepared. Make your way there and start climbing up the edge of the mountain. I was lucky in that I had another player already camped there, so I fast traveled to them and made my way up the rocks.

Vault 63 is pretty easy to find. Just follow the indicator, and you’ll get there. This completes the mission and triggers the next in the Skyline Valley questline. The upcoming area also hosts a new enemy type, and they’re extremely tough, so make sure you’ve got all your best gear before heading in.
