Hatsune Miku is getting her own set of Magic: The Gathering cards throughout 2024

The first Secret Lair drop is in less than two weeks.

There have been plenty of strange Magic: The Gathering crossovers, but if you showed me cards based on virtual idol superstar Hatsune Miku, I’d have assumed they were fake if Wizards of the Coast hadn’t posted them on its own website.

Per the official announcement, a whole set of Hatsune Miku themed Magic: The Gathering cards will be coming out over the coming months as part of the Secret Lair series. The first batch, titled Secret Lair x Hatsune Miku: Sakura Superstar, will launch on May 13 for $29.99 (non-foil) and $39.99 (rainbow foil), but it’ll only be available until June 2. Here’s hoping Wizards of the Coast has measures in place to prevent scalping because I can foresee these cards being hoarded and sold for obscene prices on sites like eBay.

There will be four Hatsune Miku drops throughout 2024, with each one representing a different season. The announcement only has details for the Sakura Superstar batch, which consists of the following six cards:

  • Harmonize
  • Inspiring Vantage
  • Miku, Lost but Singing (identical to Azusa, Lost but Seeking)
  • Miku, the Renowned (identical to Feather, the Redeemed)
  • Miku’s Spark (identical to Chandra’s Ignition)
  • Shelter

As you can see, half of the cards are just Hatsune Miku variants of already existing cards, but they’ve got some fantastic art (I especially like the look of the Inspiring Vantage card), and they’re a nice alternative for those who want to run a themed deck based around the Vocaloid idol. Plus, it’d be amusingly jarring to place her in a deck alongside MTG‘s own fantasy icons and other crossover characters, like The Doctor from Doctor Who and The Walking Dead‘s Negan.

MTG has many other sets planned for 2024, and you can find the full release schedule for yourself here. This also includes yet another crossover, one with Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series, which will be out in the summer. In the meantime, you can check out the new Hatsune Miku music video made to promote her MTG crossover over on YouTube.
