Developer Naked Rain is working on an incredibly pretty game in the same vein as Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and Arknights: Endfield. Project Mugen is another premium free-to-play title players can dive into and lose themselves before they realize all they want from it is to collect and level up every possible character. Amid a slew of similar games launching in 2024, this one seems to be the most playful and easy to get into.

When is the release date for Project Mugen?

At the time of writing, Naked Rain hasn’t revealed the release date for Project Mugen. The game was revealed in August, 2023, but there’s been no news of a release date at all. I’ve no doubt that the developer will wait until the game is ready before it announces a release date, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the official social media channels like Twitter to see it when it’s shared.

What platforms will Project Mugen be available for?

Project Mugen is coming to mobile devices on iOS and Android, PC, PS4, and PS5. At the time of writing, there are no details on whether the game will be released simultaneously for all platforms or launch in waves from one after the other. This should be confirmed close to the time of release. But it is clear the game is intended for PS4 and PS5 given that its first two trailers have also appeared on PlayStation’s YouTube channel.

Is Project Mugen multiplayer?

Yes, Project Mugen has a single player and multiplayer mode, but it’s not multiplayer as you might expect in the traditional sense of an MMO. Instead, Naked Rain has explained how players will be able to invite each other to their worlds to play alongside them. This almost sounds like co-op to me, but a lot more free and casual, which is great to hear in a world where most online games are hyper competitive.

Will Project Mugen be free?

Yes, Project Mugen will be a free game, built around the usual free-to-play model. This means it will feature microtransactions to recoup costs and help the developer fund ongoing work on the title. The core of these microtransactions will almost certainly be the game’s gacha system, which is the only way players can reliably pick up new characters.

To pre-register for Project Mugen, you need to visit the official website and sign up through the pre-register option at the bottom of the screen. You’ll need to provide your email address and agree to the terms of service. After that, it’s a waiting game until you get an email about the release date and where to pre-load the game.

Is Project Mugen a gacha game?

Yes, Project Mugen is an open world RPG with gacha elements to it. While you’re able to explore the world freely as you investigate the chaos that’s emerging, you’ll meet friends along the way and can pull for new ones using banners. We don’t know the specifics of this mechanic but it should follow what similar titles do. Banners may rotate to offer different characters every week or month, giving players a chance to pick up every character they want.

All Project Mugen trailers

Below, I’ve listed every trailer for Project Mugen that’s been released. More and more will ramp up as we close in on its release date and are provided with more information.

The Disclosure of Product Information trailer for the game might be one of the strangest-titled videos I’ve ever seen, but it does exactly what it says it will. This is everything you need to know about Project Mugen in a nutshell.

The reveal trailer is the first look we ever got at the game. Even now it’s something to behind just because of how it takes what you know from Genshin Impact and elevates it.
