With the Xbox version on the horizon, FFXIV’s player count surpasses 30 million

It keeps getting bigger and better

Final Fantasy XIV just wrapped up its 2024 Fan Festival celebration in Tokyo, and announced a new player milestone in its wake. According to Square Enix, the official FFXIV registered player count now stands at over 30 million users.

Just days into 2024, the development team celebrated the 30 million registered players with a Twitter announcement. How does Square Enix quantify that number exactly? Your guess is as good as mine, but note the “registered” bit doesn’t mean active players.

Now, with FFXIV headed to Xbox for the first time with its Open Beta in February 2024, that number may grow. It’s also just in time before the next expansion, Dawntrail, launches this summer. It’s another major turning point for the game and its enthusiastic community, and preparing for those player surges was among the many talking points at this year’s Fan Fest.

While there’s no specific date just yet for players on Xbox Series X/S versions, Patch 6.55, Growing Light, continues just ahead of the open beta, launching on January 16 for PC and PS4/PS5. For folks just starting on Xbox, you’ll have a lot to catch up on before arriving at the 6.x patch era, but perhaps you’ll get there in time for Dawntrail after a major grind.

There’s no denying that Final Fantasy XIV has one of, if not the most impressive redemption arcs in game development. The rocky 1.0 launch went from has gone from a 2010 collapse to being one of the most played MMOs in the world, with players logging on for hours every day to explore Eorzea.
