Super Meat Boy tempts fate, tells us not to be like Hitler

I really want Super Meat Boy to come out. The game has great art direction, killer old-school difficulty, a Don Hertzfeldt-flavored sense of humor, and is planned to feature 12 indie game characters in multi-player mode. An indie Smash Bros is something I’ve wanted for a while, and this game could make it happen, if Nintendo doesn’t pull the plug on it first.

When promoting your WiiWare game, you might be able to get away with making a half-joking dig at vegetarians, but Hitler jokes? I’ve never seen it attempted before, and I’m guessing there is reason for that. Nintendo doesn’t like it when you mention the word “Wii” (if that is a word) and “Hitler” in the same breath. It just doesn’t create the kind of mental image they’re going for right now.

It will be interesting to see if Super Meat Boy actually ever comes out. With WiiWare, videogames just have a nasty habit of disappearing. I’m still waiting to review the “new and improved” Eternity’s Child WiiWare, but after Luc Bernard’s “Nazi” game got Nintendo all annoyed, it may be that the guy might never get his stuff on a Nintendo console.

Maybe I’m overreacting, but thus far, Nintendo has shown they have absolutely no problem with games not coming to their consoles. Only time will tell if my paranoia is justified.
