You unlock skills by spending Skill Points awarded for leveling up. When you have at least one point to spend, open the main menu and navigate to the Skills tab. You can see how many skill points you can earn at the bottom-left section to the right of your current level. Below that section shows how much XP you need to level up and earn another Skill Point.

6 skills you should unlock early in Spider-Man 2

There are a lot of abilities you can choose from, but I feel these are the absolute must-have skills you need to build a spectacular bad guy-butt-kicking foundation. In the spirit of brevity, I’ll keep this list at six. Feel free to also swap out one or two that you believe suits your playstyle better. Every Spider-Person is their own, after all. I’ll split them up three ways: Miles Morales; Peter Parker; and Shared.

Miles Morales

Venom Punch: Concentrated Force

Miles earns the Chain Lightning skill after running into Martin Li. While it’s a fantastic skill with a lot of mid- to late-game potential, upgrading Venom Punch is a better choice early in the story. Go to the Abilities tab to swap Venom Punch back into the arsenal. Next, unlock Venom Punch: Concentrated Force, which unleashes a cone of damage for every use. It’s excellent for dealing with large groups of foes, especially against all those hunters who love getting all bunched up.

Venom Jump

Venom Jump is a perfect skill when Miles needs to deal with large groups of enemies. Wait until he’s surrounded and then use it to launch them into the air. Attack as many as you can before they hit the ground. But the beauty of Venom Jump is that the move also applies a mild, brief stun. So, even after they hit the ground, you can still wail on them without much worry of retaliation.

Peter Parker

Spider Shock

Just because he doesn’t have Miles’ Venom powers, doesn’t mean that the original Spider-Man is old news. Equipped with new abilities that take advantage of mechanical arms, Peter can now keep up with the younger Spider. And with that, you should absolutely purchase Spider Shock as soon as possible. It costs two Skill Points, but it’s worth it. The ability sends out several bolts of electricity at enemies in front of Peter, stunning them and causing damage ā€” sometimes enough to take them out of the fight for good.

Web Whip

Let’s be clear: You will fight armed enemies almost right away in Spider-Man 2. In fact, once you start throwing fists with the Hunters, you’re going to want to get Web Whip immediately. The skill lets you rip an enemy’s weapon from their hands and hurl it back at them. This not only damages your foe but disarms them permanently. When faced against enemies with machine guns, crossbows with explosive bolts, and rocket launchers, Web Whip is a must.

Web Throw

After Web Whip, unlock Web Throw. With it, any enemy in a stunned state (webbed up, electrified, Venom Stunned, etc.) can be twirled around and thrown by holding the triangle button. It’s especially effective against webbed-up enemies, whom you can stick to nearby walls or other objects. You can also throw webbed enemies into objects from the air. Tap the R1 button to web up an enemy while in the air, then hold the triangle button. If you angle it right, you can easily stick the foe to a wall or lamp post. It puts them out of the game quickly. Web Throw is one of the best skills you can unlock first in Spider-Man 2, and I know you’ll use it often once you do.

Perfect Dodge Recharge

You learn to dodge early in Spider-Man 2. Why not let your newfound knowledge benefit you even further? Get the Perfect Dodge Recharge. For every perfect dodge (when the Spider Sense flashes red) you earn a small recharge for your Abilities. With enough practice, you should be able to get Abilities back much faster than before.
