Is Cyberpunk getting another anime?

A lot more cities to burn

The success of the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the reinvigoration of Cyberpunk 2077 has many wondering if another anime is coming. While the show isn’t returning, it’s still up in the air whether other companies will take on Night City.

Released in September 2022, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a collective effort between Japanese anime studio Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann) and Polish game developer CD Projekt Red (The Witcher franchise, Cyberpunk 2077). It takes place in the same universe as other Cyberpunk projects, mainly Cyberpunk 2077. The series follows newcomer David Martinez as he makes his mark as an edgerunner in Night City alongside a cast of ruthless yet endearing criminals.

Upon its release on Netflix, the show was lauded by audiences and critics alike. The show’s faithfulness to the franchise, as well as its animation, soundtrack, and cast made for an unforgettable 10 episodes. Destructoid’s Tiago Manuel ranked it 2nd place in his list of the best game-adapted TV shows. For a time, it even reinvigorated the game’s player count, two years after Cyberpunk 2077‘s release.

However, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is not set to get a second season, though they are interested in other takes on it. According to a Famitsu interview (translated by VGC) with CDPR’s account manager Satoru Honma, he said that while Edgerunners stands alone, he would love to see other studios take on the IP.

The studio has been looking into expanding into more media due to the series’ success. So far, a sequel to 2077 and a live-action project have been announced. And, with the recent success of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the hype for the franchise is at an all-time high.

It would be interesting to see MAPPA or Ufotable create stories for Cyberpunk, as their styles resonate with its themes. Still, Studio Trigger set an incredibly high bar for other entries to beat. One thing is certain: Cyberpunk fans will be over the moon with whatever comes next.
