Who is the Nightsong, Dame Aylin in Baldur’s Gate 3?

What can silence the Nightsong?

In the second act of Baldur’s Gate 3, should you insist on killing Ketheric Thorm, you will need to complete Shar’s Gauntlet, a massive dungeon resting beneath the Thorm Mausoleum. In this dungeon is a necromancer named Balthazar, who is seeking the enigmatic Nightsong.

It’s not all too clear who or what the Nightsong is until the end of Shar’s Gauntlet, but we are told that it’s the only thing keeping Ketheric immortal — so, if we’re going to kill him, we need to deal with this mysterious Nightsong. At the end of Shar’s Gauntlet, we’re finally able to meet her: Dame Aylin, also known as the Nightsong, who is being held captive by the goddess Shar in her domain.

It’s then that the player must choose — are they going to kill Aylin, or let her live? It really is a parallel for another story arc later in the game, but it’s a tough choice all the same. But who is Dame Aylin? Let’s take a semi-non-spoilery look at this strange, but important, character in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Who is Dame Aylin in Baldur’s Gate 3?

At our first meeting, Aylin is understandably bitter. She’s the warrior daughter of the goddess Selune who has been trapped by Shar and forced to serve as a conduit for Ketheric’s immortality for a century, and she’s just about had enough.

In my playthrough, I chose to have Shadowheart — who was commanded by Shar to end the Nightsong — spare her instead, which resulted in Aylin becoming a significant ally in the battles to come. She helped me defeat Ketheric, then I invited her to my camp, where she assisted in battles at Baldur’s Gate.

In the aftermath of the fight with Ketheric, we learn that she and Isobel (who is Ketheric’s daughter) are in love, which is objectively the sweetest thing I have ever seen. Ketheric is implied to have kidnapped Aylin for Shar as a means of coping with the loss of Isobel, who was then returned to life by Myrkul.

All that being said, Aylin is a very important character in Baldur’s Gate 3, whether you decide to fight by her side or shift her from this mortal coil. You know, like a monster.
