How to stabilize Gale’s Netherese Orb in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Stopping the clock.

In all of Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s one character I simply can’t vibe with, and it’s Gale. Apologies to all the Gale stans out there, but when there are characters with integrity and honesty such as Wyll, Shadowheart, and Karlach, Gale is just so unserious with his backstory and it annoys me.

For those out of the loop (or for those blessed few who forgot/refused to recruit Gale), his story is effectively that he managed to sleep with a literal goddess, got magically impotent, and decided to prove his worth by finding what is effectively the sorcerer’s stone. And now, he needs to actively consume magical items or he’ll explode, or something.

But — if you went through the trouble to recruit him, you might as well find a way to stop him from needing to consume said magical items. I mean, magical items are already pretty rare, so it can be very annoying having to give them up to prevent Gale of all people from exploding. Here’s how to stabilize Gale’s Netherese Orb in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to stabilize Gale’s Netherese Orb

You can’t — at least, until the beginning of Act 2. You’ll be faced with a choice to either take the Mountain Pass to the Shadowlands or the Underdark. For this purpose, you’ll want to take the Mountain Pass, where you’ll eventually run into an old wizard named Gandalf Elminster Aumar.

If you don’t have Gale in your party — as Mystra intended — Elminster will somehow know that you’ve recruited him and ask to visit your camp. If Gale is included in your party, Elminster will still find a way to invite himself back to your camp, so it’s best to simply accept that.

In the ensuing conversation, Elminster will tell you that Mystra — the aforementioned goddess — has offered a chance for Gale to redeem himself for his transgression. It really amounts to this: Gale’s need to consume magical items will be sated, and in return, he’ll kill both himself as well as The Absolute. I guess that’s one way of redemption.
