Sony has finally announced the production of a slimmer PS5 model after years of rumors and speculation. Itās sent to launch āthis holiday season,ā which, judging from the seasonal stock in most department stores, started sometime in July.
I canāt believe itās been nearly three years since the launch of the PlayStation 5. For the longest time, it was hard to even get your hands on one. If you were someone who persevered and got a launch model, hereās the inevitable spit in your eye.
Itās not that bad, though. The slimmer PS5 model doesnāt have any more horsepower and is coming fitted with the same size hard drive (1TB). The reveal trailer doesnāt really show off any comparison between the two models, which is because thereās not tremendous difference. Itās described as having reduced āmore than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24%.ā So, itās definitely leaner in line with the PS4 or PS3 redesigns. The launch model PS5 was a pretty chonky beast, so Iām sure your shelves will thank you.
It comes in both disc and all-digital versions, though the digital version will now have an option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. The vertical stand is sold separately for some reason.
The slimmer model PS5 will start showing up in stores āthis holiday season.ā The price remains $499.99 USD for the disc model, and 449.99 USD for the discless one.
