Sega releases adorable animated prologue for Sonic Superstars

The whole gang is here!

We won’t be getting a Sonic Mania sequel just yet, but we can expect a classic Sonic experience this year thanks to Sonic Superstars. We already know that the game will feature 2D side-scrolling, though it has ditched the pixel art style of Sonic Mania. Jun Senoue will be handling the soundtrack with some help from Tee Lopes.

As the release date draws nearer, Sega has been dropping quite a few teasers, including a music track reveal. The latest tease comes in the form of a gorgeous animated short movie serving as the prequel to Sonic Superstars. You’ll be familiar with this colorful animation style if you’ve played Sonic games released in the past few years such as Sonic Origins.

Sonic’s troublesome trio

The short movie, titled Trio of Trouble, starts with Fang the Hunter up against Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. Fortunately, Sonic and his friends outsmart Fang.

Fang isn’t the only villain around, however. Dr. Eggman also makes an appearance and we get to see more of Trip, who is a new foe. As the prior reveal illustrated, Trip is dressed in metal armor, and she is quite clumsy and prone to setting off booby traps.

Working together, Fang and Trip subdue a slippery serpent, but that isn’t quite what Dr. Eggman had in mind. Though they seem like a ragtag group of villains tripping over themselves, it does seem like they’ll pose a significant challenge.

You can play Sonic Superstars when it launches on October 17 on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
