How to get and equip weapon skins in Starfield

Put some color on that laser gun.

There are a lot of cool-looking weapons in Starfield, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need a bit of freshening up from time to time. Staring at the same laser cutter mining for precious metal like titanium gets a bit dull, right? Starfield lets you get and equip weapon skins, but there is a price to pay.

To be clear, weapon skins shouldn’t really be your priority in Starfield. I don’t say that because the skins aren’t interesting. It’s more that there really aren’t that many skins to speak of. And rifling through chests, drawers, and the inventory of dead pirates won’t quickly get you more.

You have to pay a bit upfront to get and equip Starfield weapon skins

Ahead of the game’s launch, there were two ways to get weapon skins. The first was by pre-ordering the game. Those who quickly put their money down early managed to nab the Old Mars weapon skin for the default laser cutter. Obviously, if you didn’t pre-order the game, you missed out. Well, kind of. The skin is a striking gray and brown, so you may not feel the need to weep. The other method is to buy the premium edition of the game. It comes with the Constellation Skin Pack, allowing you to drape an Equinox Laser Rifle, spacesuit, helmet, and boost pack in the faction’s colors.

How to equip the weapon skins

Equipping the weapon skins is honestly quite simple. All you need to do is head to the nearest weapon workbench, activate the cutter or laser rifle, scroll down through the mod slots, and click on ‘Skins.’ Choose the skin, and there you have it. You can remove skins by going in the reverse. You’ll need to have the weapons in your inventory before you can customize them. Note: as far as I can tell, you cannot change the skin for Heller’s Cutter, as it counts as a rare weapon.

I’m not sure if Bethesda will add more skins to the game. If there’s a chance we’ll see more in the near future, I’d bet it’ll happen when the game’s first story expansion arrives.

My opinion on the best Starfield weapon skin

There are only two weapon skins available in Starfield, so it’s not like there’s much competition over which is best. Unless you really like having a gray cutter. But if there was, then I’d give a solid eight to the Constellation-themed Equinox skin. White with a rainbow band that stretches from the stock and toward the top, it’s a clean and attractive skin. I mostly use ballistic weapons now, but early in my run, I was rocking this look on my Equinox.
