In the privacy of the Destructoid offices, we have this discussion every few days: what’s better, hard copies of games, or digital ones? Editor-in-Chief Nick Chester likes to trumpet that digital is obviously better and that anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron, but some of us still love our hard copies (and to cause him a constant reason to hate our guts).
Rock Paper Shotgun recently interviewed Christian Svensson, Capcom’s Vice President of strategic planning, and he offered some key words about Capcom’s vision of how Digital Distribution fits into the company’s future:
“Digital distribution on PC ties directly into our strategy. Capcom is trying to lead in digital distribution, and I would go as far as to say that in the console space we are already the leading software publisher. We’ve had the highest revenue-generating Xbox Live title, we’ve had the highest revenue-generating Wii title, we’re definitely in the top three or four on the PlayStation network. To that end, on the PC side, I’ve spent the past year building up a digital distribution channel that has about twenty different partners. We’re ready on the console side, and we were the first Japanese publisher to do anything on Steam.”
When asked if he felt that digital distribution was more important for the PC than retail, Svensson replied “For me? Absolutely. No question in my mind.” Somewhere, Nick Chester is laughing in the way only a vindicated man can. However, I can’t say I don’t agree on this point — I purchased digital copies of the last 3 PC games I bought. However, I prefer to own hard copies of my console titles. Would you rather own a hard copy, or is an all-digital future a-ok with you?
