How to get Essence of the Oversoul in Destiny 2 – Weapon Guide

Destiny 2’s Crota’s End Raid, and Season 22 as a whole, has been an oasis amidst a dry spell within the franchise. After a disastrous State of the Game and the reveal of The Final Shape expansion proved successive fumbles, Destiny 2 could use a win. To that end, Guardians have been flocking back to the game to take on the reprised Raid and lay the son of Oryx to rest. Along the way, players will likely stumble into the Quest that rewards the Necrochasm Exotic auto rifle. While finding the Exotic Quest is guaranteed after defeating Crota, players will need to spend some time hunting for Essence of the Oversoul before Necrochasm and its catalyst are ready to use.

Players must first defeat Crota, grab the “Bottomless Pit” Quest from his sword, and complete the first few steps. The beginning of the Quest tasks players with eliminating Hive while using the Husk of the Pit auto rifle. When that’s complete, the auto rifle transforms into the Eidolon Ally. Guardians will then be asked for Essence of the Oversoul. While a few methods promise this resource, it could take some time before players have enough to complete their Quest. And they’ll need even more to complete the Necrochasm’s catalyst later.

Where to find Essence of the Oversoul

Essence of the Oversoul is a resource that’s unique to the Crota’s End Raid. It can only be acquired through encounter completions or specific Raid triumphs. Bungie has confirmed that completing Crota’s End will drop at least one Essence per account per week. But beyond that, they’re a little tougher to come by. Players haven’t exactly figured out the drop rate for Essence of the Oversoul, but Guardians are starting to estimate that it’s not too high. 

Some Guardians have reported as little as a meager three Essence after over 20 encounter completions. Thankfully, it can be farmed by repeatedly completing any encounter or the whole Raid. Guardians will just have to hope RNG is on their side.

Crota’s End Triumphs that reward Essence of the Oversoul

• Perfected Truth: Without leaving the Raid or swapping characters, Guardians must overcome all encounters without dying. (Essence of the Oversoul x3)
• In Unison: Complete all encounters in Crota’s End with a Fireteam consisting of six guardians using the same class. (EotO x1)
• Conservation of Energy: Complete the “Conservation of Energy” challenge for the Abyss encounter. (EotO x1)
• Feather-Light: Do not allow any player to reach 10 stacks of the Weight of Darkness debuff during the Abyss Encounter. (EotO x1)
• Precarious Balance: Complete the “Precarious Balance” challenge during the Oversoul Throne Bridge encounter (EotO x1)
• Threatening Reach: Only players that have made it to the other side of the chasm can eliminate Swordbearers during the Oversoul Throne Bridge encounter. (EotO x1) 
• Equal Vessels: Complete the “Equal Vessels” challenge during the Ir Yût encounter. (EotO x1)
• Communal Rites: At least one Guardian must become Enlightened and use the “Expunge” action on Ir Yût each damage phase. (EotO x1)
• All For One: Complete the “All For One” challenge during the Crota encounter. (EotO x1)
• Singular Sensation: Only allow one player to be Enlightened at any given time during the Crota encounter. (EotO x1)
• Broken Throne: Complete all Crota’s End encounters on Master difficulty. (EotO x2)

How much Essence of the Oversoul do players need?

While the final part of the “Bottomless Pit” Quest demands 20 Essence of the Oversoul to obtain the Necrochasm initially, players won’t be done there. If Guardians want to juice up the Exotic auto rifle, they’ll be after its catalyst soon after earning the weapon. Players can earn the Necrochasm’s catalyst by locating and completing two timed trials within the Raid. However, more Essence of the Oversoul is required to start using the catalyst.

Guardians will need to pony up another 15 Essence before the catalyst for Necrochasm is fully ready to use. That means, in total, players will need 35 Essence of the Oversoul before they can consider their hunt done. Though this might take players some time to achieve, at least the weapon and its catalyst’s acquisition can be easily followed.
