When you take out your planetary scanner after landing on the surface of a planet with an anomaly, you will be able to track down the anomaly via the distortions. To follow the distortions, spin very slowly on the spot with your scanner out. The outer circle of your scanner will begin to distort, showing red, blue and green glitches, and when all of it is distorted, you will know you are facing in the direction of the anomaly.

Set out in that general direction, and watch the distortions carefully. If the distortions are too weak, slowly move forward to see if they completely disappear. If they do, you are heading in the wrong direction. Turn around and walk back in the opposite direction so that they return, then keep going to see if they get strong. If the anomaly you seek is located mostly to the left or right, you’ll see the distortions grow in intensity on that side of the circle, so turn toward it.

They should grow in severity and be joined by a crackling sound as you get closer to the anomaly. The anomaly itself will be located in a large temple that will rise up on the horizon, and the temple will have two doors in the base. as you get closer, your mission to follow the distortions on the scanner will be replaced with a mission to investigate the source of the distortions. When you get there, head inside, and you will find a powerful secret.

It is likely the first time you need to do that will be in search of Temple Eta, as part of the Into the Unknown mission. It will be the same process on every other planet, just with a different temple at the end.

What to do in the Temples in Starfield

Inside the temples, you will find an array of rings that rise up out of the ground in the center of the room. You will also be able to float, which is nice! As the rings spin, small glowing collections of sparks and light will appear in the room. You may need to scan around to see them. Use your boost back to maneuver yourself around and gather them up by passing through them.

Sometimes, you might miss it, but that’s okay. Another one will appear. Each time you grab one, the music will grow more intense to let you know you were successful. When you have done this enough times, the spinning rings in the center of the room will explode with light and form a stable circle. Fly through the circle to reveal a powerful vision of the universe.

After doing it, you will be moved outside the temple and will most likely need to make your way back to the Lodge on Jemison. The good news is that you will have access to a new power to explore, which can be all kinds of fun.
