Once you reach the character creation stage of Starfield’s intro, you’ll have to pick three traits for your character. Many of these typically give you a perk alongside some kind of catch. For example, the Alien DNA trait will give you increased max health at the cost of making HP recovery less effective. So what the heck is going on in Starfield with the Hero Worshipped trait? Does it really just give you a fan who won’t shut up?
In short, yes, players who pick the Hero Worshipped trait in Starfield will meet the Adoring Fan in New Atlantis City. Fans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will notice a strong resemblance to that game’s Adoring Fan. While vocal and enthusiastic, he doesn’t really present any downsides when you meet him. In fact, you can recruit him as a crewmate if you don’t immediately brush him off. He may also give you gifts on occasion to prove his devotion.
If you pick the Hero Worshipped trait, you won’t have to try hard to find the Adoring Fan. He’ll approach you and initiate conversation all on his own. Some people find him insufferable, even if he does give you gifts. I personally don’t mind him that much, based on spending a couple hours with him at any rate.
Can you get rid of the Adoring Fan if you pick the Hero Worshipped trait?
If you do later come to regret your decision of picking the Hero Worshipped trait, you can get rid of your fan. Granted, this means that you kind of wasted that trait slot, but at least you won’t have to start your file over to never hear his voice again.
Note: The following was tested based on recruiting him as a crewmate.
You have two options for dropping the fan. The first involves persuading him into thinking you’re actually a terrible person. To do this, initiate conversation with him and select these options:
1: Do you mind if I ask you some personal questions?
2: We need to talk about your fandom.
3: Kindly get lost.
4: [Persuade] No, I want you to stop being a fan, period.
This will initiate a Persuasion sequence, with six notches to fill. Even in my early game file, I was able to complete this just fine for testing purposes. The forlorn fan will declare that you’re awful and will instead become a fan of wholesome activities like watching cat videos. Honestly, a relatable stance.
How to kill the Adoring Fan
Your second option is decidedly less wholesome. If you really want to take your revenge out on your fan, you can kill him outright. Yes, this is awful, but I’m not here to judge your conscience. To do this, initiate conversation with him and choose these options:
1: Do you mind if I ask you some personal questions?
2: We need to talk about your fandom.
3: [Attack] It’s time for you to go. Permanently.
From here, you can select any of the three options with the [Attack] tag on it. Afterwards, you’ll see a notice that the Adoring Fan is no longer essential. This will give you the freedom to open fire on him, though you should know he’s a resilient guy. It’ll take a few shots to bring him down, and he won’t even consider fighting back.
Do note that your party members probably won’t take kindly to watching you murder someone. So if you’re in front of any comrades, your reputation will take a serious hit. You also won’t exactly earn much from looting the fan afterwards. This is certainly a drastic option, and one that I wouldn’t really recommend unless you like playing the outlaw. But it is there if he’s really driven you up the wall.
