What is max level in Starfield?

Even the sky is not a limit

Starfield gives players several skills to unlock across five skill trees. Additionally, you can invest in those skills to upgrade them further. This means youā€™ll use a lot of skill points you earn from leveling up, but how selective do you need to be? Will you run out of the skill points you need by the time you hit max level in Starfield?

Fortunately, there is no max level in Starfield. The game will let you level up endlessly, potentially giving you the freedom to unlock anything and everything your protagonist can learn. That said, you realistically wonā€™t even get close to unlocking every skill in one playthrough. For reference, our reviewer was only level 35 when they cleared the gameā€™s main story missions. So prioritize earning the skills you want the most, but donā€™t worry about running out of skill points.

Weā€™re still making our way through the game, so weā€™ll still have to see firsthand what it takes to truly max out a protagonist. However, obtaining every skill in the game would theoretically require you to reach level 328.

Do you need to grind in Starfield?

Even though the max level is limitless in Starfield, the obstacles youā€™ll face wonā€™t require such high levels. The highest recommended level for a system in Starfield weā€™ve seen so far is 75. Even then, Starfield doesnā€™t scale encounters the way that, say, an ARPG like Diablo does. You can survive just fine even ten levels below the recommended threshold.

That said, keep in mind that Starfield also offers a New Game + mode. This will take you to the beginning of the story, but will retain your characterā€™s level. Will this unlock challenges that test characters even at level 100 and beyond? Stay tuned as we learn more about the outer reaches of Starfield.
