How to Dock Ships in Starfield

Permission to land granted.

Your spaceship is pretty versatile in Starfield, and once it’s modified enough, you can turn your vehicle into an unstoppable force of fury. Once you’re done zipping through the cosmos, you’ll eventually want to land. You can do that on a viable planet or moon, or you can dock onto some structures, including staryards and enemy ships. It isn’t a particularly complex process, but it is easy to forget the steps.

How to dock in Starfield

When you’re flying out in space, you’ll occasionally come across structures you can dock on. This includes the Nova Galactic Staryard, as well as The Eye which orbits Jemison. To do this, you’ll first need to fly close to the structure. Once you’re close enough, hail it to ask permission to dock. You can do this by focusing your reticle on the docking platform, then holding the A button on the Xbox Series X/S or E on PC.

If you’ve got permission to dock, then just hold X on Xbox or R on PC. A brief cutscene will play and you’ll find your ship docked on the structure. From here, you’ll be able to exit your spaceship and explore the structure you’ve visited. When you’re ready to leave, just get back into your cockpit seat and hold the same button you used to dock.

Docking onto enemy ships is a little more complicated. You’ll first have to disable your foe’s engines. You do this by targeting the ship and then selecting the engines to lock onto. Note that this requires the Targeting Control Systems skill from the Tech section of your skill tree. After the engines are down, fly close to the ship and hold X on Xbox or R on PC to dock.

You’ll be doing a lot of traveling throughout the cosmos, so it’s worth taking the time to upgrade your spaceship and acquire new ones. There are a few places to do this, including the New Atlantis landing spot on Jemison.
