Undead Wardens patrol this ancient prison

Despite being home to hordes of undead, the Onyx Hold can be a very worthwhile dungeon to run. Specifically, if you’re able to get Nightmare Sigils for Onyx Hold, make sure you run it. Due to its quick completion time and very easy mechanics, you can run it as a Nightmare Dungeon for great loot.

With how valuable this dungeon can be for loot drops, we’ve put together an Onyx Hold dungeon guide for Diablo 4.

Onyx Hold dungeon location

The Onyx Hold dungeon is located in The Onyx Watchtower area of the Dry Steppes region. In order to unlock it, you must first cleanse the evil in The Onyx Watchtower stronghold. Doing so will unlock this area’s Waypoint, dungeon, and vendors.

The fastest way to reach the dungeon is by teleporting to the Onyx Watchtower Waypoint. The Onyx Hold is literally directly north of the waypoint, making it one of the fastest dungeons to warp to.

If you somehow still have trouble finding it, just reference our map above and follow the red line!

Upon entering the Onyx Hold you will receive your first task: Slay all enemies in the Rotting Penitentiary. Don’t worry, despite the intimidating name, the Rotting Penitentiary is just the initial area of the dungeon.

Once you’ve cleared out all the undead enemies at the start, you will be tasked with your next objective: Travel to the Bastille of the Damned. Clearing the previous monsters will remove a wall blocking your path forward through the dungeon, allowing you to access the Bastille of the Damned.

While traveling through this area, you will encounter a big Construct of Bones. Your objective will update to Destroy the Construct. Doing so will lead to the final area of the Onyx Hold, and your final objective: Slay the 3 Languishing Corpses. If you are running the this as a Nightmare Dungeon, you will have to kill six of them as opposed to three.

The Languishing Corpses are Elite monsters. They are scattered throughout the end area of the dungeon, and can be taken down pretty easily. In this final area you can also encounter the Elite optional boss Arminel Flarebang. He hits pretty hard, but does not require anything special to defeat. He can drop some rare loot, so I suggest taking him down.

After defeating the Languishing Corpses you have completed the dungeon.

Rewards for Onyx Hold in Diablo 4

The primary reason Onyx Hold is such a rewarding dungeon is its quick completion and Elite-centric quest objectives. Running it as a Nightmare Dungeon is so valuable because it increases an already high chance of finding rare loot here.

If this is your first time completing Onyx Hold, you will also receive 30 Renown and the Storm Swell Offensive Legendary Aspect for your Codex of Power. This Sorcerer-only Aspect increases the damage you deal to Vulnerable enemies when you have a Barrier.
