Does Ghost die in the MW2 2022 campaign? Answered

A tale of two campaigns

The most popular part of the Call of Duty seriesā€™ campaigns is the characters. If you were to put a poll out, one of the most beloved story characters would likely be Simon ā€œGhostā€ Riley, despite only appearing and playing a role in a single mainline game in the series (plus its remake). That said, his story in Modern Warfare 2 (2022) is somewhat different.

Does Ghost die in the Modern Warfare 2 campaign?

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a loose remake of the original MW2 from 2009, Activision and developer Infinity Ward took the time to change up quite a few elements of the plot. As such, answering the question of Ghostā€™s fate, understandably, constitutes spoilers. Here is your formal spoiler warning before I dive deep into the gameā€™s ending.

As for the answer to whether or not Ghost dies in the Modern Warfare 2 2022 single-player campaign, the answer is no, he doesnā€™t die in this game. This may come as a shock to long-time CoD fans, as it wasnā€™t necessarily the same story in the original sequel.

How MW2 2022 differs from the original Modern Warfare 2 2009 campaign

Oddly enough, the same twists regarding Ghost and General Shepherd donā€™t happen in the remakeā€”at least not in that exact way. This new version of the story still features Ghost and Shepherd as characters, but none of the crazy events happening with them occur in this version of the story.

In fact, nearly every single main character makes it to the end of the story, from Captain Price to Soap and more. The ending scene shows all of Task Force 141 hanging out together and celebrating their successes from the single-player campaign.

This is a stark contrast to the darker ending that the original 2009 title had. With Ghost still alive at the conclusion of Modern Warfare 2, this paved the way for him to return in the lore of subsequent Battle Pass seasons for the game.

This honestly makes a lot of sense, given the rumors surrounding the Call of Duty 2023 title. Rumored to either be a full-on single-player expansion for Modern Warfare 2 or a direct sequel in the form of a possibleĀ Modern Warfare 3, it seems that Infinity Ward wants to keep Ghost around.

This will seemingly allow him to play a significant role in the continuing storyline of Task Force 141. There is always the chance that Ghost could die in the upcoming CoD 2023 release, but that is a twist that fans will have to wait and see about for now.
