Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma is known as the man behind the N64’s legendary Ocarina of Time, a resume addition that should see any man set for life. Aonuma, however, is no ordinary man. Not content to rest on his laurels, the producer has stated that he won’t quit until he creates a game even better than Ocarina.
“I’m happy that a title I worked on some time ago remains highly praised to this day, but that also shows how none of the subsequent games in the series have surpassed it,” he explains. “As someone who is still working on the series, I have mixed feelings about that. Because I haven’t yet surpassed it, I can’t quit. Surprisingly, that simple motivation may be the reason I continue to work on the Zelda series.”
Now that’s a man I can respect. I loved Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, but to see a man so driven to do better, especially in an industry where cheap and rushed sequels have become the standard, is incredibly encouraging. Best of luck to Eiji Aonuma. If he can succeed in his goal, then it’s safe to say that we’re all going to be winners.
