The image posting tool was removed this week
The 3DS and Wii U image posting tool was removed: which itself seems insignificant, but actually highlights the slow, and at times, absurd deaths of the systems.
The news comes straight from Nintendo’s Japanese customer service Twitter account, which states (translated): “Nintendo 3DS series and Wii U ‘image posting tool’ service ended today at 4:00 pm. Images from the Nintendo 3DS series and Wii U cannot be posted after. Images and comments posted on Facebook and Twitter can be viewed on each SNS even after the service ends.” The official end time was October 25 at 4PM JST. So it’s over!
As you may recall, both of these devices are on the way out, and are being completely disconnected from pretty much every service by 2023. Most of their online functionality was already ripped away, as we move toward the “March 2023” full end date when everything is gone.
It’s a shame. I get that legacy devices do need to end service at some point. But it’s funny to boot up some really old devices, and just….game on PC…and see a ton of online functionality alive and well, like nothing changed. I love the Wii U and 3DS to pieces, but the latter in particular has an incredible legacy that Nintendo should forever be proud of. I wish it could live on past March 2023.
