Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
As I was watching thisĀ Zelda: Breath of the Wild clip from DatMemeConnoisseur on Reddit, I couldn’t help but remember the olden days of starting out in this version of Hyrule. As I’ve said quite a few times, I thankfully was able to play an advanced version ofĀ Breath of the Wild, completely isolated from any meta, discourse, or guides. It was just me and the wilderness, and wouldn’t you know it,Ā I completely wandered off into Hyrule Field and got blasted by Guardians. It’s a rite of passage.
In fact it’s something everyone should experience if at all possible; the complete terror of hearing and seeing that laser line for the first time. You can witness that horror in the Zelda: Breath of the Wild clip below in real time, as Link dodges, ducks, dips, dives, dodges out of harm’s way. When told that Hyrule Field was a place of death by a commenter, the video’s creator noted that they “unfortunately learned that the hard way.” Seeing a player donned in Flamebreaker Armor in Hyrule Field, and not use their shield to deflect shots is also a chef kiss moment; the latter of which I didn’t start doing until the very end of my playthrough.
Of course, like any all-time great Zelda: Breath of the Wild clip, it has a perfect Monty Python-esque ending out of nowhere. You hate to see it! They were actually pretty successful at squirming away from those Guardians.
Now we’re at the point where people are speedrunning every possible facet of the game, like “no fast travel runs.” We’re a far cry from the moments below as a community!
