Bubble Bobble is one of the first series of games my wife and I bonded with when we met. There’s something just so wholesome about those little dragons (who were actually human boys!), and the level-by-level setup was much more enticing than the average arcade style game. Bubble Bobble in turn led to my love of many similar games like Snow Bros, and I’ll always be grateful for it.

That’s what my eyes kind of popped out of my head a little when the news tip “there’s a new Bubble Bobble in town” (okay so they didn’t actually say that, it’s all editorialized on my part) came across my desk. The new entry is Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, and it will be released exclusively on Switch later this year in Europe (November 19), with a “first quarter of 2020” date for the US. As a reminder, you can easily make an eShop account in any region, so this staggered release date won’t stop anyone.

The game will support four-player co-op and will involve a new story: “As in the previous highly popular series, the thrilling and epic bubble fight starts again! One night, a child’s room became enfolded by a miraculous light and every object under its rays suddenly came to life – including the child’s most favorite toy, the little dragon called Bub. Full of jealousy, the wicked magician Baron von Blubba challenges the friendly dragon to battle.”

Taito is handling development, and a collector’s edition is confirmed from Strictly Limited Games. If you couldn’t tell by now I’m in, despite the so-so visual style.
