Drive slow, homey
Every comment section.
Every single one.
If the article is even tangentially related to Star Wars then the entire comment section turns into a debate on the franchise. The one thing that seems nearly unanimous in all these “discussions” — even between those who like and dislike The Last Jedi — is that there’s too much Star Wars. Disney needs to slow its roll and check its money-making self as it pumps out needless films no one asked for.
Well, Disney agrees with us now. In a far-reach THR interview, Disney CEO Bob Iger said they’re slowing down their Star Wars efforts. When asked about the glut of films he took full blame for their pacing and relese:
“I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.”
In short, they’re going to still make as much money as they can, but we may not be seeing them land every summer and winter. Maybe a more traditional release schedule for franchises and less an attempt to ape Marvel’s string of success. Also of note is the fact that he doesn’t mention Rian Johnson’s trilogy of films that he’s supposedly working on.The director said it was still happening, but you’d think Iger would mention a trilogy of films in the works. Hmmmm…
