Netflix and kill
See that headline? Good. Read it again. Here it is in case you don’t want to look up: “There’s going to be a Castlevania Netflix Original series this year.”
The reason for the sass in the opening paragraph is because the headline is all that we really know about this. Netflix has announced its near-future original programming and among the entries is “Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017.” Anything beyond that is speculation.
But, as Gizmodo points out, at least our speculation can be rooted in plausibility. This is probably the project that Adventure Time production company Frederator Networks and producer Adi Shankar are collaborating on. Late last year, Frederator owner Fred Seibert said this on an episode of the Nick Animation podcast:
We have a project right now that we’re doing that needs to go unnamed, based on one of the most world-famous video games of the last 30 years, that we’ve had in our shop for 12 years without being able to get it started. But there were great characters and a great story, and eventually we got it going.
This is corroborated by the following statement from Shankar on Facebook:
Breaking News: I’m producing a super violent Castlevania mini-series with my homies Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde. It’s going to be dark, satirical, and after a decade of propaganda it will flip the vampire sub-genre on its head.
We can reasonably guess that this will be an animated series given the names of the folks who are probably attached. But, we have to wait for a bit for things like storylines and characters. Since it’s Castlevania, feel safe to assume that there will be vampires, whips, and wall meat.
