The above clip and the one following the jump showcase combat scenes from the upcoming Beowulf, a video game based on a movie based on an epic poem. Many people who cringed at the thought of the classic being turned into a Hollywood blockbuster will no doubt wear holes in their argyle sweaters fretting over what this series of ones and zeros will do to their beloved poem, but we’d like to embrace this trend of turning literary milestones into God of War modifications. Imagine a retelling of Hamlet in which you complete a series of button presses to rip off Yorick’s jawbone, or an adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath where the only way to escape the evil Mechanization of Agriculture is to collect enough grapes to go into “Wrath Mode,” where individualism and the human spirit still matter, and everything around you goes into this wicked awesome bullet-time effect.
