Fighting the corporate overlords

It has been almost a year since the Kickstarter for Banjo-Kazooie-like Yooka-Laylee closed, but studio Playtonic has been mostly quiet about it, aside from the occasional new character reveal. Today the studio let loose some screenshots “representative of the final target we’re shooting for” along with some new gameplay details.

For veterans of the old collect-’em-up genre, it sounds familiar. The bear lizard and bird bat will be collecting jiggies pages from books (called “Pagies”) in order to progress further. Then they’ll collect other stuff to unlock new abilities, and also transform via the powers of science (rather than voodoo).

The big bad is an anthropomorphized bee named Capital B, and taking down the corporate overlord will be the main goal. Expect puns like “buzzness executive” to be thrown around.

Playtonic doesn’t have a more specific release window to reveal yet, saying it is still shooting for October 2016 as given in the crowdfunding campaign, but that it’s “a group committed to releasing games only when they’re polished, complete and at the quality level you expect.”
