Open the platform. Stop having it be closed.
When it comes to cross-platform play, Rocket League is really important: it’s the first time a PC game has cross-platform play with both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
This has led some to ask whether PS4 and Xbox One players will be able to play together eventually, breaking down the platform barrier that has plagued gaming since literally forever.
Microsoft are up for it, but Sony seem a bit more hesitant, saying they’d rather work with developers and publishers individually.
Well Sony’s claim might be put to the test soon, because Rocket League developer Psyonix says it’s already figured out Xbox One/PS4 cross-platform play. It’s now just politics on Microsoft and, more specifically, Sony’s part that’s holding it back.
Talking to GameSpot, Psyonix VP Jeremy Dunham said:
The only thing we have to do now is sort of find out where we stand politically with everyone, and then it’s full steam ahead to finish the solution that we’ve already started.
Technologically everything works, we’ve got it figured out, just a little bit of time to get everything up and running. Right now, excitement is the best way to put it. We just want to get in there and make it happen. Elation is probably another word I would use. We’re just excited.
Now it’s time to see if Sony can walk the walk. Literally everyone involved with Rocket League wants this to happen, and Sony did say they’d work with developers and publishers individually for cross-platform play. Time to see if that includes connecting with their competitor’s platform.
I really, really hope Sony doesn’t screw this up.
