Virtual Boy’s the face on his knocker
Seemingly still haunted by the rattling, wailing ghost of the Virtual Boy, Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils–Aimé has ruled out the company picking a side in the growing virtual reality war.
In an interview with Polygon, it appears that Reggie feels the tech just isn’t there for what Nintendo wants yet:
“…What we believe is that, in order for this technology to move forward, you need to make it fun and you need to make it social…
I haven’t walked the floor, so I can’t say in terms of what’s on the floor today, but at least based on what I’ve seen to date, it’s not fun, and it’s not social. It’s just tech.”
So don’t go expecting a VR Starfox game, or an augmented reality Pokémon just yet. We may well end up seeing some form of Nintendo VR that allows for the social aspects Reggie wants, but it probably won’t be soon.
Sidenote: of all the things that could’ve been “The Virtual Reality War”, the Rift, Vive, and Morpheus is probably the least interesting outcome. I want Digimon god damn it.
