Puzzle games used to be big business on home consoles. Sadly for fans of the genre, these days they’re usually relegated to phones and handhelds. That may be why we’ve seen so few games in the style of seminal classic Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo hit stores in recent years. There was Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Nightthe Puzzle Kombat mode in Mortal Kombat: Deception, that that Toro game for PSP, and that’s about it.

The developers of Heroes Never Lose: Professor Puzzler’s Perplexing Ploy have seen the opening in the puzzle combat market and are working to fill it. The game appears to play exactly like Puzzle Fighter and it features cute superhero parody/tribute characters duking it out. That’s pretty darn exciting for those of us who have been waiting for an official Puzzle Fighter sequel for the past 18 years.

The game’s already been funded on Kickstarter, though it’s still got a few days to go. There are stretch goals for other consoles too. That 3DS goal sure makes a lot of sense.
