During the hustle and bustle of PAX week, there were quite a few bits of Internet awesomeness that unfortunately slipped under everyone’s noses. I always hate being the last guy to find that “cool new thing,” because it feels like I’m just following the herd. Still, I hope this is fresh enough for it to be a pleasant treat on a Sunday afternoon.
Remember how amazing box art from 20 to 30 years ago was? If the front of a game didn’t look like a Fabio romance novel, it was at least cheesy enough to pass as a really awkward comic book cover. These days, box art is so game-accurate that it’s harder to poke fun at the various idiosyncrasies. GamesRadar must have felt the same way too, which is why the editors put together a gallery of modern game boxes with old-style covers replacing the current ones.
What they’ve actually done is take art from preexisting games and paste it over copies of L.A. Noire, Skate 3, and so on. Still, the effect is pretty humorous, and it’s strange to see just how well the old designs fit with the sensibilities of modern games. They actually look better, in a hokey sort of way!
Head on over to GamesRadar for more box art shenanigans that I didn’t include here.
