An anonymous employee of Sony UK sent us an e-mail that states that up to 160 jobs are planned to be cut from SCE UK, SCEE Central, SCE Cambridge, and SCE London. The move is being made to streamline the company due to the fact that “our industry is in the middle of a period of transition where some of the fundamentals of our business are changing.”
The e-mail goes on to say that they’ll be going over with each employee whether they’re “at risk” for firing or not, and that they’ll go on to talk with the employee more if they’re at risk. You can check out the entirety of the message in the gallery. The employee told us that Phil Harrisson was there, but he didn’t talk to anyone, and wasn’t looking too happy.
What does this mean? Well, it certainly doesn’t mean that Sony is in fatal trouble. The fact is that the games division of the corporate giant was in the red due to the PlayStation 3, while most other parts of the company were reporting success. I’d gather that there’s just some pressure to cut down Sony’s losses from the games division.
