Next-gen game to be unveiled ‘in the coming months’
Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager today announced their licensing of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, making them the first independent studio to do so in Europe. Yager will utilize the new engine on their next project, “a major next-generation title” which is said to be unveiled in “the coming months.”
“Unreal Engine 3 enabled our great team to tap its full potential for the development for our award-winning game Spec Ops: The Line and beyond,” said Timo Ullmann, managing director at Yager. “Yager is thrilled to be utilizing Epic’s latest technology for our foremost project as the new workflow is incredible, and Blueprint visual scripting gives us more control over building our games than ever before.”
Spec Ops: The Line, released last summer, was praised for its exceptionally dark single-player campaign, to which we called “one of the most captivating experiences of 2012,” but was criticized for its ham-fisted multiplayer.
Unreal Engine 4’s bell and whistles include real-time dynamic global illumination, improved environmental and particle effects, and some under-the-hood stuff for developers’ use.
